Some believe that we are the commanders of our own destiny.
Others think that we don’t have control of what our futures bring, but most agree that we are here for a reason. We all have a purpose in life; we all have a calling. We all have special gift or talent, that special something that, when we share it with others, can make a world of difference.
Dharma can be translated as the path of righteousness — doing what is good for the self, the family and the Universe. It is any personal obligation, duty or calling that brings you closer to the Divine. It is the “Law of Being,” deeply rooted in compassion, supporting our happiness and contentment.
Your calling can be anything. For some, their calling is to inspire others, for others to lead, for some to create art, for others to heal or be the best parent they can be. Regardless of your specific calling, when you perform this action you can make a difference for the greater good.
In the Bhagavad Gita, one of India’s most respected and loved ancient scriptures, Krishna, tells Arjuna, how it is better to do your own Dharma poorly than to do someone else’s well. You may wonder how this applies to you.
Have you ever been stressed, overwhelmed and even ill due to doing something you did not want to do, or did not feel right for you? Sometimes what used to work for you and make you happy in the past no longer works. Often people stay in undesirable situations, just moving through the motions, because they are afraid to let go of the known and trade it for the unknown.
When you are not doing what you are meant to do, when you are not exploring and sharing your gift with others, you may feel empty and dissatisfied with your life. This can lead to stress, illness and even a life crisis.
Only you know what your Dharma is; no one else can give you that answer. By looking within and taking time to quiet your mind, you can ask yourself questions like, “Why am I here? What is my life purpose? If I have time, money, and energy what would I love to do?”
You may be surprised by the answers your intuition and inner wisdom gives you. But haven’t you witnessed others turning their life 180 degrees, now living happy and filling life?
What are you waiting for? Go and become the commander of your own destiny. Live the life of goodness and happiness you deserve. Our birthright is to live a loving, peaceful and happy life, so we can serve and share our gift with others and be closer to and unite with the Divine.
