End Yoga Porn? Mind Your Own Business

Dear Monica Deane,

What? End Yoga Porn? I just threw up a little in my mouth that those two words were written in the same sentence together.

How about ending judgment of all pictures or ending judgment, in general? Or ending the thought processes of, “I know how to practice the right kind of yoga and clearly those inbreeds have no clue.”

Let me introduce myself. Hi, my name is Jennifer Lake. I'm 34-years-old, a single white mother of one daughter, a recovering alcoholic of 13+ years, a vegan, a yoga teacher, a yoga practitioner, a dancer, a comic, a health and wellness specialist and many more things.

I am beautiful and I love my body.

"I know as a woman, I am not supposed to say this and am working on the bullet pointed article to highlight this topic. I love my body."

I have worked hard at undoing some very harmful messaging I received as a kid as well as some miswired thought processes which gave me low self-esteem, an eating disorder and a drug and alcohol addiction, all before I turned 21.

"Through my yoga practice I have realized that I am beautiful from the inside out."

My body is a temporary physical manifestation of the journey of being a human, it contains my spirit. It is a container. That is all. My body is temporary and so is everyone else’s, no matter if you are rich and famous or down and out...it will pass.

The physical practice is only a gateway to deeper pockets of understanding. I have no clue what other people are thinking. It is toxic to compare my insides and outsides to a perception of other people’s outsides.

So when I read an article like yours that is one point of view and it gets 12K likes...it makes me concerned for our species.

Was it liked because people agree? Was it liked because they did not read the whole thing? Was it liked because they don't have the full understanding?

Who are these horrible people taking yoga selfies well now we just don't know what their intention is in taking those pictures now do we? Just like we have no clue what their lives are like, what type of hardships they have been through, what type of victories they have had, and what it feels like for them to meditate.

We have no clue, nor should we care and the more you actually practice your yoga in whatever form that takes, the less concerned you become with the outside circus act that is our world. One pointed focus. Mind your ego yoga loving business, practice your yoga but please never apply the term "yoga porn" when you have no clue what the true intention is behind those pictures.

I hope my point by now has become clear but just incase there are any gray areas to cover, to summarize:

Thou shalt not compare themselves to anyone else. Because none of us have any clue what the other person is going through, has been through or will be going through judging by what they look like on the outside. And it certainly is not the person's responsibility to instruct you how to put your body into a certain posture that is in that picture. We just don’t know how many hours they spent practicing yoga. We have no clue if they love themselves and are at peace with their life. We have no idea and frankly it is none of our business. The hope is that people are sharing pictures out of the intention of joy.

It's like, "hey look at this cool thing my body can do. I feel great doing it, the yoga puts me at peace and because of the practice I have more compassion and love for myself. I hope you find the same and feel inspired by this picture. "

There is the seer and the seen, You are responsible as the seer. Your perception.
