YOGASCAPES | A Sweet Retreat to Crete – Yoga, Food & The Good Life

Featured Event

The Details

YOGASCAPES is taking you on a journey, a discovery of this ancient land. It’s traditions and history, it’s people, the towns and villages, it’s healing food and beaches.  You will be staying in the old Venetian Fortress of Fortezza in the historic landmark town of Rethymno.  At the core is a beautiful yoga shala by Triopetra Yoga Retreats and an amazing restaurant called Soul Kitchen surronded by small colorful guesthouses.

Everything is in walking distance, as we are located in the heart of the quiet part of the old town while the beach is only 5-10 minutes away.  We will be offering optional day trips to Triopetra beach, Preveli river, Kournas lake, Chania and many other destinations.

If you’ve never traveled with us before, then you should know that food is one of the most important elements of our trips and this trip especially.  The fusion of the Yoga Shala and the Soul Kitchen will create the foundation of this food exploration that will include a food tour of the town and plenty of free time to explore the amazing food of certe on your own.

Your Teachers

Dhyana Vitarelli
(Founder, Director of Teacher Trainings, ERYT, IKTY, Chopra Center Certified Meditation Teacher) was born and raised in Philadelphia, moved to Southern California in 1989, and did her formal Yoga training there in the Ashtanga (graduated from teacher trainings with Manju Jois and Tim Miller) and Kundalini (graduated from Yogi Bhajan’s teacher training at Yoga West) traditions before returning home int 2002 to open Dhyana Yoga. She has since continued her training and studies in Primordial Sound Meditation and Ayurveda (graduated from these courses at the Chopra Center) and in addition to the practice of Yoga, she practices the harmonium daily as well.

She opened the first DY location at 1212 Walnut Street in Philadelphia (now located at 1611 Walnut Street) in October of 2002 after living in Southern California for many years. As often happens with Yoga, the practice started out as a way to heal from personal wounds, including a lifetime of depression and suicidal impulses, but as those scars faded away, it naturally progressed into a desire to help others. Over time the classes at the original DY location filled, and a second location was opened in Old City Philadelphia to accommodate more people. During the following years, 3 more studios came into existence (in West Philadelphia, Ardmore, and Haddonfield, NJ) and with the addition of her husband, John, as a co-owner in 2010, the community expanded even more! What started as a passion for one person grew into a passionate endeavor to bring Yoga to the forefront in Philadelphia.

Dhyana and John happily welcomed their beautiful daughter, Lorraine “Raine” Vitarelli in April of 2012 and when they’re not on the mat, you can find them laughing and playing with her and their many dogs and cats!

John Vitarelli
(Co-owner, Co-Director of Teacher Trainings, Lead Senior Dhyana Yoga Teacher) was born and raised in Pennsauken, New Jersey, just over the bridge from Philadelphia, and was involved in sports and physical activity from a young age on various teams throughout the area. John was given a book on Yoga by his sister and spent 2 years practicing in his room with the “Sivananda Companion to Yoga” while studying to be a chef. He graduated from the Culinary Institute of America in Atlantic City in 1996, and around that time turned strongly to Martial Arts to bring some movement and physical discipline back into his life. John continued to study, practice, and teach the Eastern Arts in New Jersey while working at his family’s business (Vitarelli Tile) during the days, until a fellow trade worker referred him to Dhyana Yoga in 2006. He did his formal Yoga Teacher Certification Program with DY that year and has been an integral part of the studios ever since. John has also graduated from Tim Miller’s Ashtanga Yoga Teacher Training Program (www.ashtangayogacenter.com) and has completed trainings in Yoga with Duncan Wong and in Thai Massage with visiting teachers. Today John continues his studies in Ashtanga Yoga with Tim Miller and locally with David Garrigues, and attends programs in health and metaphysics at the Chopra Center in Carlsbad, CA. John and Dhyana were married on Guru Purnima in 2010, and live near his childhood home in New Jersey. Besides his deep love for Yoga, he also enjoys making pottery, traveling, learning about wine, politically driven punk rock, hip hop and screamo, gardening, football, hanging with his best friend, Dhyana, his pets, hiking, cooking delicious meals for anyone and everyone!

The Food

Soul Kitchen offers delicious, home-cooked meals that nourish the body while enticing the soul.  The food, along with the yoga and the beautiful natural landscapes, creates a synergistic energy that permeates the retreat.  Our talented, experienced chef, Chris Clark, specializes in macrobiotic, raw, vegan and vegetarian cuisines. However if you are new to these culinary domains, you need not sorry.  Chris reinvents and improves many traditional dishes, creating an excellent balance between familiar favorites and intriguing unknowns.
